Great question. Let’s run a scenario: You’ve got $30,000 worth of credit card debt, at an annual interest rate of 20% pa (according to the RBA, the average credit card interest rate is 19.94%). That works out to an annual interest cost of $6,000 or $500/month assuming you’re not adding to that $30,000 of debt, not paying off any of the principle. Let’s say your monthly cashflow surplus is only sufficient to cover that $500/month worth of interest. You can’t afford to pay off any of the principle, so you can’t move forward. In short, your credit card is maxed out, and you’re only just able to stay on top of things. This will severely inhibit your ability to save money for a rainy day, let alone apply for a home loan.

What if we could negotiate that $30,000 worth of credit card debt down to a $3,000 settlement, saving you $27,000? And what if our total fees (including success fee) cost you less than what you’d spend in interest over 12 months of holding that debt, not making any dent whatsoever in the principle? Without stating the obvious, the maths stack up.
